Battery Management System

Global warming caused by human activities is becoming more and more a problem for our society. In order to limit the damages to our environment, worldwide legislation is pushing towards the development of renewable energy technologies and sustainable transportation. Batteries are expected to play a key role in achieving this goal. They are scalable devices that can be adopted, in addition to portable devices, on electrified vehicles (xEVs) and smart grids applications.

However, although lithium-ion battery cells have continuously evolved since their first commercial application 30 years ago, many problems still have to be solved: energy density, charging time, safety, lifetime, materials supply chain, and cost are some of the points that need to be addressed in the next few years.

Marelli is a market leader supplying automotive components. The BMS (Battery Management System) is one of the main components in the Vehicle Electrification division product portfolio.

The BMS is a fundamental component to guarantee battery cells safety, to monitor the available energy and degradation condition, and to optimize the battery use to reduce aging.

Davide Cavaliere, alumnus of Politecnico di Milano and currently System Engineer working for Marelli Japan, introduces the latest battery cells and BMS technologies available for automotive applications.
